Guiding Principles

In 2006, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s (CHPCA) Canadian Network of Palliative Care for Children modified the CHPCA’s national principles and norms of practice for pediatric care, ensuring that children receiving Pediatric Hospice Palliative Care are given the best care possible.  The Guiding Principles and Norms of Practice that should be followed as a guide to assist health care professionals are:

1. Child/Family Focused Care
2. The Value of the Therapeutic Relationship
3. Continuity of Care
4. Communication
5. Accessibility

This document also provides assistance with ethical considerations in pediatric hospice palliative care:

1. The child’s ability to consent to treatment
2. The amount/type of information that should be shared with the child
3. Family-focused decision making
4. Pain management
5. Decisions to forego potentially life-sustaining treatments or to withdraw life support
